PRIVATE LESSONS
In addition to performing, I also offer private lessons for clarinet and saxophone students. I am happy to teach any age or experience level, but mostly aim my lessons towards middle school and high school students. In lessons, I cater to the specific needs of students but generally aim to make sure that students learn proper technique and handling of their instruments, know all 12 major scales and their associated arpeggios, and expose them to repertoire and etudes that are appropriate for their age/skill level on their instrument. I am also happy to cover materials such as ETSBOA All East and Junior Clinic audition pieces and associated scale and sight reading requirements. Frequently asked questions:
What instruments do you teach?
I teach clarinet, bass clarinet, alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and baritone saxophone. In addition, I am also happy to teach lessons on other harmony or specialty clarinets such as alto clarinet, contrabass clarinet, contralto clarinet, Eb clarinet and A clarinet. I do not teach flute or double reeds such as oboe or bassoon.
Do I (or my child) need to have their own instrument?
Yes, all students to need to have the instrument that they intend to take lessons on whether it be owned personally or rented from a school or music store. I do not provide or rent instruments to students. That being said, if you need advice or help regarding obtaining an instrument, I am happy to point you in the right direction. Please reach out!
Do you expect students to have a specific brand of instrument/mouthpiece/reeds etc?
No, I have no specific requirements regarding brands of equipment. All I ask is that whatever instrument you or your student has works properly and is in playing condition (no leaks, missing corks, missing pads, severe cracking or other body damage, chipped or broken mouthpieces, missing or broken ligature screws, wobbly or loose tenons, missing or severely bent or stuck key work). If you need help with an instrument problem, I am happy to assist you and perform basic repairs if necessary. If you have questions about a specific brand or piece of equipment, I am also happy to provide guidance. Please reach out with any concerns or questions!
Do students need to know how to play before coming to lessons?
I offer beginning lessons for first time or young players, and thus I do not expect those students to know how to play their instrument before coming to lessons. Outside of beginning lessons I do generally expect students to at least understand the basics of how to play, especially for older middle school and high school students.
Do you travel to student’s locations or do lessons at student’s homes?
No, I will not come to the home of a student to do lessons in the interest of integrity of both myself and the integrity of the student. All students must travel to the location at which I will hold lessons, usually in a university practice room or other public location. There will be no exceptions made.
Am I (or my child) allowed to take lessons on multiple instruments?
Yes! I am happy to teach multiple instruments so long as the student can balance practice and improvement between them. Students must have access to both instruments for lessons. Please contact me for specific details regarding taking lessons on multiple instruments.
